Midway Ice Castle

Here is another winter activity that would be fun for the whole family! Just remember to dress warm, and maybe go out for some hot chocolate afterwards :)

This winter, Ice Castles, LLC will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to Midway as it unveils a massive castle made only of ice. The Ice Castle will feature lofty ice towers, shimmering archways, glowing tunnels, narrow slot canyons, glossy walls, roomy caverns and frozen thrones—all made entirely of ice.

Ice Castles are the brainchild of Utah-based ice architect Brent Christensen, who began building small ice structures in his Alpine yard in 2008. In 2009, Christensen built his first large-scale Ice Castle at Midway’s Zermatt Resort. In the three years since, Christensen has built Ice Castles in Colorado and Minnesota that have attracted over 300,000 visitors. Christensen has patterned his design for Midway after well-known geological features across the state, like slot canyons, arches and cave-like tunnels. Guests are invited to not only view the beauty of the structures but also to squeeze, squish and crawl through parts of the stunning, Narnia-like display. 

Past visitors have been awed by the palatial abodes, each of which are created entirely by hand, using only icicles and water as the building medium. Millions of icicles sparkle a glacial blue by day and glow multi-colored at night with the help of thousands of LED lights embedded in the ice.

“Ice Castles really are one of the most unique and beautiful places on earth,” said Christensen. “And every visitor gets a distinctive experience since the ice is constantly melting, freezing and being reshaped. It’s an amazing continuously evolving experience.”

For ages four and up, tickets are:

Tuesday-Thursday: General Admission: $9, Children age 4 to 11: $6

Friday-Saturday: General Admission: $ 10, Children age 4 to 11: $7

Sunday:  CLOSED

2014 US Cross Country Championships

There is so much to do here in the Heber Valley! As we find out about events, we will post them on here so you don't miss out on any of the activities!

MIDWAY, Utah.  If you are looking for a unique spectator experience then this is the event for you!  Join us for the 2014 U.S. Cross Country Championships and the 2014 U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing Championships hosted by Soldier Hollow Resort, January 2-10.

The U.S. Cross Country Championships is an important step for serious skiers 15 years and older.  The top 500 skiers in the country will compete including local athletes from the Park City Nordic Ski Club, Team Soldier Hollow, The Utah Nordic Alliance, and the Wasatch Nordic Ski Academy. 

The U.S. Paralympics Championships features adaptive skiers who bypass physical challenges by using special equipment.  Standing and sit ski athletes will compete in all scheduled races with the addition of a Biathlon Sprint race.  This is a qualifying event for adaptive athletes looking to be named to the 2014 Paralympics Games Team.

Soldier Hollow, the 2002 Winter Olympic facility, is located in the Heber Valley within the Wasatch Mountain State Park.  This is a spectator friendly facility offering easy access to the course.  Choose your favorite spot to watch these top contenders.  Whether it is at the start or finish line, a long climb, or a fast downhill -- you are sure to have a colorful and exciting experience.
